Cabras (OR)

The archaeological museum of Cabras is named after Giovanni Marongiu. In the museum are on display the archaeologcal finds of Cuccuru Is Arrius, a prehistorical settlement, of Tharros, the phoenician-punic and roman town, and of the shipwreck found near the island of Mal di Ventre. Recently the museum has become the home of some of the giant statues of Mont'e Prama, with the most recent statues found during the excavations in 2015 on the site.

Museo Arch. Giovanni Marongiu

The archaeological museum Giovanni Marongiu at Cabras has an extensive collection of artefacts obtained from excavations or through casual finds in the territory of Cabras. A visit may take up to one hour. There are also interactive media with information on the territory, like the site of the big statues of Monte Prama. The museum has been set up with four thematic divisions.

The first part is dedicated to the prehistoric site of Cuccuru Is Arrius, excavated and removed to make place for the broad canal that connects the lagoons of Cabras to the sea. Next to neolithic earthenware there have been found statues of obese females, believed to represent the mother goddess or mother earth of fertility. The second part is dedicated to the Sardinian bronze age, the nuragic era, with ceramics and bronze artefacts. A special bronze is the votive ship with animal figurines. In the third part of the museum you will find many artefacts from the archeological excavations of Tharros, steles and urns from the tophet but also jewellery from the punic graves. Finally the last part of the museum is dedicated to the underwater archaeology, shipwrecks found under the coasts of the peninsula of Sinis and the island of Mal di Ventre. There are anchors and nails and many lead bars from roman shipwrecks.

The museum is an excellent addition to the archaeological site of Tharros itself and should definitely be included in a visit to the peninsula of Sinis.

Recently the museum has also several of the statues of Mont'e Prama on display including the latest finds.
