The Sartiglia at Oristano 2011
This Sunday, the 6th of march, the first day of the Sartiglia of Oristano 2011 was held. The ringstabbing contest and the gallop of the teams of horsemen in Via Mazzini has been broadcasted live by Videolina, the Sardinian television station, starting at h. 14.00, and on internet it was broadcasted by the Fondazione Sartiglia in cooperation with Tiscali, starting at h. 12.00.
At 12 o'clock the vestizione took place. The leader of the day, su Componidori, is first ritually dressed by two women, the massaieddas, under the supervision of the massaia manna. From that moment su Componidori may not touch the ground anymore during the entire day.
The spectacular contest of the ringstabbing, where the riders have to gallop at full speed on horseback and try to stab a star with their sword, took the largest part of the afternoon. Of the 117 participants in the end only 86 had the chance to show their ability, and only 20 succeeded in taking the star. At the end of the contest su Componidori, captain of the Gremio dei Contadini, closed this part of the day by managing to take the ring with his lance, su Stoccu, under the cheers and standing ovation of the public.
At the end of the afternoon the pariglia took place, the contest where the teams of three horsemen gallop through the street performing daring acrobacies while managing to keep their horses perfectly aligned. Only the team of su Componidori will not dare such acrobacies at the risk of the captain hitting the ground. Of all the teams two horseman bit the dust, fortunately without serious injuries. The performance is judged by a capable jury that will not only take in account the rider but also the horse and the cooperation of the team. Comments on the television are given by an expert in the Sardinian horseworld.
Tuesday the second day will be organized by the Gremio dei Falegnami with their su Componidori leading the day's festivities.
