Sant'Efisio, 359 year Sardinian tradition
Every year the first of may Cagliari is the scene of the procession of the martyr Ephysius, Sant'Efisio in italian. It is the most important event for Cagliari for Ephysius is the patron saint of the town. Every year the traditional procession include many groups dressed in traditional Sardinian wear, horsemen and ox-carts, all following the statue of the saint from as far as Nora to Cagliari.
He was one of the first martyrs of christianity on Sardinia, persecuted by the Romans he ended up in jail and eventually condemned to death in 303 AD. Under Spanish rule christian celebrations were encouraged and since 1657 the feast of Sant'Efisio has been established. This year the event is organized for the 359th time.
