Genna Maria is a nuragic site in the hills near Villanovaforru and is one of the complex type of nuraghi. It has a magnificent view over the Campidano.

1

The nuraghe of Genna Maria, near Villanovaforru, lies on a hilltop overlooking the plains of the Campidano. The nuraghe was built with marl stones, much weaker than basalt. It had undergone some reconstructions and was abandoned after a large fire.

2

The nuraghe of Genna Maria has a central tower and three additional towers. Here one of the three added towers with the loopholes that were closed in a later phase by a large surrounding wall.

3

The nuraghe can be visited through a scaffolding passing over the main part. Here a view of the corridors leading to the chambers of the towers

4

Note that the marl stones are smaller than for example the nuraghi of Losa or Su Nuraxi. The style of building remains essentially the same: without cement and with inclined walls.

Ahead the entrance to one of the towers, to the left the corridor leading to the main entrance.

7

The exit of the central tower, which is just below from where the picture is taken. At the moment of my visit a professional photographer was just making pictures in the central room of the nuraghe.

The entrance of the nuraghe Genna Maria. Above the passage made in scaffolding for visits. It was not permitted to enter the nuraghe itself.

9

The entrance of the nuraghe. This part is built with regular blocks and may have been from later restaurations. After the punic and roman times the place has been reused.

A view from the hilltop of nuraghe Genna Maria. In the foreground the ruins of the village around the nuraghe. Discernable the hilltop of the castle of Monreale (medieval), vaguely behind that the Campidano and the mountains of the Iglesiente. On clear days you will be able to see the Gulf of Oristano.

11

Part of the village of Genna Maria. This village was abandoned with the great fire. Built in marl stone it is part of the latest phase of the nuraghe.
