Cagliari, founded by the Phoenicians and called Karali or Karales, is now the capital of the autonomous region of Sardinia. It has a university, an archaeological museum and a historical centre of particular beauty.

One of the main gates of the medieval city of Cagliari, the Torre dell‘Elefante. The city is called Casteddu (castle) by the Sardinians, while the official name, Cagliari, is derived from the latin Carales which was derived from the Phoenician and Punic Karali. The medieval towncentre is built on a hill and fortified with walls and gates like the one in the photograph.
